Temporomandibular Joint Treatments by Lourdes Barros
If you’ve experienced jaw pain, clicking when you chew, or constant aching in your temples or neck, you know how quickly it can take the joy out of your day. For some, it gets so bad that eating certain foods or even talking for short periods, can become super uncomfortable. Many clients are surprised to learn that these symptoms are often linked to the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). This is the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull.
We work with TMJ issues regularly and see first-hand how much relief, targeted treatment can provide. Whether it’s easing pain, preventing lock jaw, or reducing tension headaches caused by TMJ dysfunction, the right approach can make a significant difference. A game changer for most of those who are suffering from pain associated with TMJ disfunction.
Please note that all clients will have slightly different TMJ issues and treatments will differ from person to person. Below is a basic guideline of what you can expect in one of our treatments at Movement Matters.
What to Expect in a TMJ Session
TMJ treatment is a hands on, targeted approach to releasing muscle tension and restoring healthy movement within the jaw and surrounding tissue. Your TMJ works constantly, when we talk, chew, yawn, so if it’s not functioning well, you will definitely notice.
We’ll begin by discussing your symptoms and habits. Do you clench your jaw during the day? Grind your teeth at night? Experience headaches, neck tension, or ear pain. These details help us to understand the underlying causes. We will assess the muscles in your jaw, face, and neck, and test how your jaw moves when opening and closing your mouth.
Treatment usually combines external and internal techniques:
- External massage works on the muscles along the jawline, cheeks, temples, and neck.
- Internal massage (done with gloves) reaches deeper muscles inside the mouth that are often the main contributors to jaw pain. While this can feel unusual at first, many clients report immediate relief and improved movement.
Alongside the manual therapy performed during your TMJ treatment, We will also provide simple stretches, postural tips, and strategies to reduce jaw tension in your daily life. If stress or desk posture are contributing factors, we will address those too.
For TMJ issues linked to dental concerns, injuries, or arthritis, our therapists are happy to work alongside your dentist, physiotherapist, or other healthcare providers to ensure a tailored, integrated approach. The goal is always the same, to help our clients Move Better, Feel Better and Live Better.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How many sessions will I need?
It varies. Some people notice improvement after just one session, while longer-term issues may need multiple treatments. Our therapists will always give you an honest recommendation after your first appointment. - Is it painful?
Most clients describe it as a “good” discomfort, like releasing a knot in the shoulder. We always work within your comfort level and check in as we go. - Will this fix my jaw clicking?
Sometimes yes, if it’s caused by muscle tightness. If the clicking is due to joint structure changes, we may still reduce pain even if the sound remains. - Do I need a referral?
No, you can book directly. If your dentist or doctor has recommended TMJ treatment, that information can be helpful. - Will my symptoms come back?
It’s possible if the contributing habits or stresses remain. That’s why we provide tools to help prevent recurrence, and regular check-ins can help keep symptoms at bay.
Living with TMJ issues can be frustrating, but you don’t have to put up with it. A personalised treatment plan can restore movement, reduce pain, and help you get back to eating, speaking, and laughing without discomfort. If jaw pain is affecting your daily life, addressing it now could save you years of ongoing tension.
