On Sunday, 2 August 2026, runners from across Perth will gather for the Accura Perth Half Marathon & 5km, one of the standout events on the West Australian Marathon Club calendar.
Movement Matters Remedial Massage practitioner Leone will be joining the runners on the start line this year, taking part in an event that celebrates fitness, community and an ongoing commitment to giving back.
Whether you are preparing for the half marathon, taking on the 5km or supporting someone competing, August is a timely opportunity to think about how your body is coping with the demands of running, training and recovery.

About the Accura Perth Half Marathon & 5km
The Accura Perth Half Marathon & 5km is held by the West Australian Marathon Club and welcomes runners of different ages, backgrounds and experience levels.
For some participants, the event is an opportunity to chase a new personal best. For others, it may be their first organised race, their first half marathon or simply a chance to enjoy running as part of a supportive local community.
This year’s event also supports the Lions Save Sight Foundation, helping to raise funds and awareness for work that protects and improves vision within the community.
For Leone, taking part is an opportunity to combine her own involvement in running with Movement Matters’ commitment to helping people remain active, mobile and connected to the activities they enjoy.
A Community Built Around Running
For more than 55 years, the West Australian Marathon Club has helped build and support Western Australia’s running community.
Established in 1970, the club organises events for runners of varying abilities and distances, from shorter community races through to half marathons and full marathon events.
While competition and personal achievement remain important parts of the club, WAMC also provides runners with opportunities to train, socialise, build friendships and participate in events that support charitable organisations across Western Australia.
Every runner has a different starting point.
Some begin running to improve their health. Some are working towards a particular distance or finishing time. Others simply value the structure, friendships and sense of belonging that come from participating in a shared activity.
Whatever the goal, having the right community and support around you can make it easier to remain consistent and continue moving forward.
Looking After Your Body Before Race Day
Training for a half marathon or 5km event places repeated demands on the muscles, joints and connective tissues of the body.
As weekly kilometres increase, runners may begin to notice tightness, restricted movement, fatigue or recurring areas of discomfort.
These symptoms do not always mean that a serious injury is developing, but they can be signs that the body is struggling to adapt to changes in training volume, intensity, terrain or recovery time.
Remedial massage treatment before an event may help runners:
manage muscular tightness and discomfort
identify restrictions affecting movement
improve awareness of how the body is moving
support recovery between training sessions
address areas becoming overloaded
maintain movement and range of motion
Treatment should always be tailored to the individual runner and the stage they have reached in their training plan.
A strong or intensive treatment immediately before race day may not always be appropriate. In the final days before an event, treatment will generally focus more on maintaining comfortable movement and avoiding unnecessary post-treatment soreness.
Recovery After the Perth Half Marathon
Crossing the finish line is only one part of the event. What happens afterwards also matters.
Following a half marathon or 5km race, it is normal to experience some degree of muscular fatigue, stiffness or soreness. The body has been placed under sustained physical stress and needs time to recover.
Post-event treatment may help manage areas of tension, restore comfortable movement and identify any issues that became noticeable during the race.
Recovery will vary between runners depending on factors including:
training history
previous injuries
race intensity
running technique
hydration and nutrition
sleep
overall recovery capacity
Rather than relying on a standard treatment for every runner, we begin by discussing how your body responded during and after the event.
This allows us to select the most appropriate treatment techniques and avoid applying unnecessary pressure to areas that may already be fatigued or irritated.
Remedial Massage for Perth Runners
At Movement Matters Remedial Massage, we work with runners of different abilities, from people beginning a new fitness routine through to experienced competitors managing demanding training schedules.
Our approach focuses on understanding the individual rather than applying the same treatment to everyone.
Your appointment may include an assessment of movement, posture, gait, muscular tension and any previous injuries or recurring problem areas.
Depending on your presentation, treatment may draw from techniques including:
deep tissue and sports massage
trigger point therapy
static and dynamic cupping
myofascial release
Muscle Energy Technique stretching
dry needling
joint mobilisation
relaxation massage
gait analysis
static postural assessment
dynamic movement assessment
No two runners move in exactly the same way.
Training history, biomechanics, previous injuries, work demands and recovery habits can all influence how the body responds to running.
Our goal is not simply to work on the area that feels sore. We look for patterns of restriction, tension and compensation that may be contributing to reduced movement or recurring discomfort.
Supporting Runners Beyond Race Day
Although the Perth Half Marathon takes place early in August, the demands of running do not disappear when the event ends.
Some runners will be recovering from race day. Others will be returning to regular training, preparing for another event or continuing to work towards longer-term fitness goals.
The WAMC member offer is therefore available throughout the entire month, giving runners time to book treatment at a point that suits their own training and recovery needs.
